Taken from the Sofia Morning News

The Italian food safety authorities have discovered a shipment of poisonous mushrooms from Bulgaria intended for supermarkets in Rome.

The information was reported Wednesday by the Bulgarian National Radio, BNR.

Food inspectors found in the shipment green death-cups, one of the most deadly mushrooms 50 grams of which are enough to kill an adult and 30 – a child. They are often mistaken for the field mushrooms considered a delicacy.

The Italian authorities say the whole incident is a mistake and can be attributed to inexperienced mushroom pickers, adding the swift reaction of the drug safety inspectors shows Italian customers can rest assured imported food in local supermarkets is safe over the strict control.

Supermarkets in Rome and central Italy sell about 150 tons of mushrooms a year. Italy imports mushrooms mainly from Romania, Bulgaria and Macedonia.

The last similar incident happened 7 years ago with a shipment from Morocco.
