My wife and I (UK pensioners) filled in the S1 form from NHS 3 years ago and had ourselves put on the Bulgarian system, our GP does not charge us for visits to her and we have a pink book that we use each month at the Aptik for our medicines. My wifes inhaler is free,75 lv to buy over the counter, and our other meds are at a discounted price.A couple of years ago I was diagnosed with cancer and the Bulgarian Oncologist advised me that I should return to UK for treatment, this I did and at no point was I asked in the UK to pay for anything. This despite the fact that I was upfront when registering (temporarily) with a new UK GP having let my old GP registration lapse, and the hospital having to translate all my medical notes from Bulgarian into English.

Sorry to hear about your cancer, but it seems that you have it covered fairly well.

Because my country has no agreement with Bulgaria I have three options...

1. Put up and shut up...

2. Pay through the nose, which I did only once...350 lev for a 2 min consult!

3. Keep fingers crossed and hope for the best.
