I must be missing something here...if you are flying to Varna from the UK, just fly direct...or vice versa. If you need to go to another destination which isn't serviced from Varna, fly to Sofia and join the one you want. Quite a few airlines fly out to various European destinations from Sofia these days and waiting times are not that bad. As far as the comment about not many people leaving BG for these other countries, you might be surprised to learn that many of these flights end up being overbooked. We have just been through a major exercise involving my Mother in law who is off to Canada in the first week of January...getting her booked to Brussels on the regular flights to that country was almost impossible (all airlines suggested she go on the standby list). Getting her a flight to Schipol was the same until I managed to cash in a favour (owed to me by someone who works in the industry)...all sorted now, but it took just over two months of messing about.

Just to add a bit more to the equation...have a look at the 2015 figures...scroll down a bit and check out who actually flies from here to where ever you may want to go.

Without wanting to start a grumpy argument, or to sound pedantic, the people who fly into or out of Bulgaria are not always British or Bulgarian.

The domestic connection sounds interesting.

After a bit of research there doesn't appear to be a good connection at Sofia
First flight from Sofia to Varna is on 26th March at 18.35hrs for 35.19 leva

Ryanair Stan/Var, Arrive 11.45hrs and 18.35hrs
EasyJet LGW/Sofia Arrive 11.25hrs and 20.15hrs
Wizzair LTN?Sofia Arrive 13.05hrs and 00.15hrs
BA LHR/Sofia Arrive 13.15hrs

So the best connection flight looks like the BA flight with an airport wait of 5 hours and 20 minutes

Considering the alternative, I'd say that's not too bad.

you have oviously not sat in Sofia airport for 5 hrs waiting for an onward flight....its murder !

Actually, it was considerably longer than 5 hours...that's why I carry a book when I fly.

In any case the delay really only applies if one is flying to or from certain UK airports...otherwise use the direct flights.

I would never be flying to the UK anyway, the connections I need take me elsewhere.

Well typical, now we don't fly to and fro so much these days, everything is getting better. Even found train from P'Boro direct to Stansted in April and in Nov we went to visit daughter and found direct coach from Stansted to Heathrow all these years of paying taxi's to airports and back But we know now for next time.

They must be feeling the pinch as their marketing attitude has definitely changed since there has been more competition
They used to offer 10% off and you had to book during a specified 24 hours, now as you can see they are offering 20% off over a 3 day period

How can Wizzair justify these prices for flights from UK to Bulgaria for the same day Easyjet flights in June. EasyJet over £120 cheaper
I suppose if Wizzair can get bums on seats at that price they have no reason to reduce their prices

Just another couple of options Blueair from Luton to Bucharest and British Airways Sofia to Heathrow or Bucharest. Been looking at all of them for mid August and prices are from £343 to £414 inc luggage and seating. You can also fly from Sofia to Varna or Burgas with Bulgarian Air. Worth checking them out too.
