First topic message reminder :

Ash from Iceland volcano disrupts European flights

LONDON — British airport operator BAA says all flights in and out of Heathrow and Stansted airports are to be suspended shortly because of ash clouds drifting from Iceland's spewing volcano.

Hundreds of flights across Britain have already been canceled, and airports in Scotland closed. Heathrow is Europe's busiest airport, with more than 1,200 flights a day.

A spokeswoman for BAA said Thursday the decision was being made "
due to airspace restrictions, in accordance with international regulations."
Flights are to be suspended from 1100GMT (8 a.m. EDT).

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

LONDON (AP) — Ash clouds drifting from Iceland's spewing volcano disrupted air traffic across Northern Europe on Thursday as airports shut down and carriers canceled hundreds of flights in Britain, Ireland and the Nordic countries.

In Iceland, hundreds have fled from floodwaters rising since the volcano under the Eyjafjallajokull glacier erupted Wednesday for the second time in less than a month. As water gushed down the mountainside, rivers had risen by up to 10 feet (3 meters) by Wednesday night.

The volcano was sending up smoke and ash that posed "
a significant safety threat to aircraft,"
Britain's National Air Traffic Service said, as visibility is compromised and debris can get sucked into airplane engines.

In Britain, flight were suspended in the English cities of Manchester and Birmingham, as well as in Northern Ireland's Belfast and the Scottish airports at Aberdeen, Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Europe's busiest airport — London's Heathrow — had at least 150 flights canceled, while London's Gatwick airport had 138 canceled by 8 a.m. (0700 GMT).

Most of the cancellations involved flights to and from northern airports.

"
I think I might cry,"
said Ann Cochrane, 58, of Toronto, one of the passengers stranded in Glasgow. "
I just wish I was on a beach in Mexico."

In northern Sweden all air traffic was suspended, affecting the cities of Skelleftea, Lulea, Kiruna and Hemavan, the national aviation authority said.

Air traffic in northern Finland was also halted.

Norway's King Harald V and Queen Sonja — who had planned to fly Thursday to Copenhagen for the Danish queen's 70th birthday — were looking to take a "
car, boat or train"
after the Norwegian airport operator Avinor said it was closing all commercial airspace, royal family spokesman Sven Gjeruldsen said.

A canceled trans-Atlantic flight left Norway's Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg grounded in New York, where he had been meeting with Norwegian businessmen.

Ireland's low-cost airline Ryanair canceled all of its flights in and out of Britain through Thursday, but said it would try to operate some flights out of southern Ireland.

The national carrier, Aer Lingus, canceled at least 40 flights in or out of Dublin, Cork, Shannon and Belfast.

Emirates airline said it canceled 10 roundtrip flights between Dubai and Britain on Thursday because of the ash cloud.

The U.S. Geological Survey said about 100 encounters of aircraft with volcanic ash were documented from 1983 to 2000;
in some cases engines shut down briefly after sucking in volcanic debris, but there have been no fatal incidents.

In 1989, a KLM Royal Dutch Airlines Boeing 747 flew into an ash cloud from Alaska's Redoubt volcano and lost all power, dropping from 25,000 feet to 12,000 feet (7,500 meters to 3,600) before the crew could get the engines restarted. The plane landed safely.

In another incident in the 1980s, a British Airways 747 flew into a dust cloud and the grit sandblasted the windscreen. The pilot had to stand and look out a side window to land safely.

Volcanic ash is formed from explosive eruptions. Particles as hard as a knife blade range in size from as small as 0.001 millimeters (1/25,000 inch) to 2 millimeters (1/12 inch), the Geological Survey says.

Ash can melt in the heat of an aircraft engine and then solidify again, disrupting the mechanics, the agency says.

Europe Flights "
Back to 100%

Flights across Europe are expected to return to "
100 percent"
on Thursday - seven days after ash from an Icelandic volcano forced the shutdown of airspace and stranded thousands of passengers around the world, the air traffic agency Eurocontrol said.

Eurocontrol said in a statement it expected 22,500 flights, or 80 percent, to take place on Wednesday, compared with about 28,000 that would normally be scheduled.

It added almost all of European airspace below 20,000 feet was available, with restrictions in some areas such as Finland and parts of northern Scotland.

Its latest advisory for Thursday morning shows the ash cloud restricted to the north Atlantic between Iceland and Norway and Scotland.

At its peak, the crisis affected 1.2 million passengers a day and 29 percent of all global aviation, according to the International Air Transport Association.

It was the worst disruption of air traffic since the September 11 terrorist attacks in the United States in 2001. Following those attacks, the United States closed its air space for three days, forcing Europe to postpone all transatlantic flights.

In addition to clearing a massive backlog of passengers and cargo, airlines now face financial headaches as well as logistical ones.

The International Air Transport Association estimated Wednesday that the Icelandic volcano crisis cost airlines more than USD 1.7 B in lost revenue through Tuesday. Between Saturday and Monday, when disruptions were greatest, IATA said lost revenues reached USD 400 M each day.

The crisis began after the volcano beneath the Eyjafjallajokull glacier erupted Wednesday and sent a cloud of ash into the atmosphere. By the next day that cloud had reached Europe, where authorities quickly closed the airspace over safety fears.

Flights Banned in Ireland, UK over Ash Risk

All flights in and out of Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic are to be grounded from 0700 BST because of fresh risks from volcanic ash.

Airspace over the Outer Hebrides in Scotland is already closed, affecting operations from Stornoway, Tiree, Barra and Benbecula.

Flights in the rest of the UK are operating as normal.

An ash plume is drifting south from the same Icelandic volcano that wreaked havoc to European air travel in April.

Flights over Europe were banned for six days last month because of fears of the effect of volcanic ash on plane engines.

The decision to lift the restrictions followed safety tests that showed the engines could cope in areas of low density ash.

The fresh disruption comes as European Union transport ministers are meeting in Brussels to discuss ways to improve air traffic management in the wake of last month's events.

In the Irish Republic, aviation authorities have re-imposed a ban from 0700 to 1300 BST (0600-1200 GMT) on Tuesday.

The IAA (Irish Aviation Authority) said flights from the UK and continental Europe flying across the airspace would not be affected.

And in the UK, the Civil Aviation Authority said all Northern Ireland airspace would be closed from 0700 BST.

Belfast International, Belfast City and City of Derry airports will all be closed until further notice.

Earlier, the CAA closed airspace over Scotland's Outer Hebrides from 1800 BST on Monday, disrupting flights to and from Barra and Benbecula.

In a statement, the CAA said the decision followed consultation with the UK Met Office and Nats, the air traffic control service

Hundreds of flights have been affected:

All Aer Lingus flights to and from Dublin, Cork Shannon and Belfast airports to the UK and Europe scheduled before 1300 have been cancelled. Most transatlantic flights will operate.

All Ryanair flights into and out of the Irish Republic and Belfast in Northern Ireland until 1400 have been cancelled

Aer Arann services to and from Derry and Donegal airports were cancelled on Monday night

EasyJet warned flights departing from Scotland and Northern Ireland on Tuesday could face disruption

BAA, which operates six UK airports including Heathrow, Stansted and Glasgow, is advising passengers heading for Ireland to contact their airlines for advice.

New Ash Alert Closes Scotland, N.Ireland Airspace

Britain's Civil Aviation Authority announced that some airspace over Northern Ireland and Scotland would be closed Wednesday because ash emissions from Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajokull grew heavier and dipped further south.

Scottish airports in Glasgow, Prestwick, Inverness, Stornoway, Benbecula, Tiree, Islay, Barra and Campbeltown will close at 7 a.m. GMT (3 a.m. ET), along with the airport in Derry, Northern Ireland, the CAA said.

The Inverness airport will reopen at 1 p.m. GMT (9 a.m. ET), but Belfast City and Belfast International Airports will close at that time. All the airports are expected to reopen at 7 p.m. GMT (3 p.m. ET).

The CAA said that airports in Edinburgh and Carlisle, Scotland, and Blackpool, Liverpool and Manchester in England were expected to remain open. Ash is expected to be near those airports, however, and the authority recommended that passengers check with their airlines before arriving at the airport.

The Irish Aviation Authority had grounded all flights into and out of Ireland between 6 a.m. GMT and 12 p.m. GMT (2 a.m. and 8 a.m. ET) Tuesday because of ash.

European aviation officials closed airports across the continent for six days last month because of an ash cloud from the erupting Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland.

The disruption to flights Tuesday came, as European Union transport ministers met in Brussels to discuss ways of improving coordination between member states in the event of another volcanic ash crisis.

Airports in Ireland, Scotland Reopen after Ash Disruption

All airports in Scotland and Ireland reopened Thursday after the latest engine-wrecking ash cloud from Iceland's volcano drifted west back into the Atlantic.

The latest threat from Iceland's Eyjafjallajokul volcano caused two days of runway shutdowns and flight cancellations in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland, inconveniencing an estimated 100,000 travelers. Irish and British airlines launched extra services Thursday to help get them on their way.

The volcano has regularly belched out ash since its eruption began April 13, and European air authorities initially reacted April 14-20 by shutting down all air services in several countries to the east, stopping 100,000 flights and 10 million passengers.

This time, newly negotiated European safety rules restricted the aircraft grounding to Britain and Ireland and involved more precise closure orders based on how close the densest ash clouds were to airports' landing and takeoff paths.

Ireland's major airlines largely resumed normal schedules by 9 a.m. (0800 GMT) Thursday, although Aer Lingus canceled 34 flights and Ryanair just four, chiefly involving airports in southwest Ireland where the ash was last to leave. Scotland's airports reopened earlier.

Volcanic Ash Cloud Closes Spanish Airports

pain is to close 15 airports as a cloud of ash from an Icelandic volcano drifts south over Western Europe.

National airport management agency Aena said nine airports were already closed and six more would shut from 10:00 GMT.

The restrictions would be in place until at least 1800, Aena said.

Most flights between Europe and North America are being diverted because of the ash cloud's latest drifting, officials at Eurocontrol said.

Flights are being rerouted north and south of the 2,000km cloud.

On average, 600 airliners make the Atlantic crossing every day, correspondents say.

Aena said the airports affected were Bilbao, San Sebastian, Vitoria, Zaragoza, Pamplona, La Rioja, Santiago, A Coruna, Vigo, Asturias, Santander, Leon, Valladolid, Burgos and Salamanca.

Last month, thousands of travelers were stranded after ash shut down airspace across Europe.

Recent images have shown activity in the Eyjafjallajokull volcano intensifying.

Experts at the UK's Met Office said it was sending ash up to heights of 9 100 meters.

Budget Carrier easyJet Cancels Sofia-Madrid Flights

cost carrier easyJet from Sofia to Madrid have been cancelled after seven airports in Spain were forced to close because of a cloud of volcanic ash drifting from Iceland.

Four airports in the Canary islands and three in southern Spain shut down on Tuesday morning, Spain's air traffic control agency Aena said, cited by the BBC.

In the Canaries, both airports on Tenerife and those on La Palma and La Gomera suspended operations at 0400 GMT.

Seville, Jerez and Badajoz airports shut down one hour later.

On Monday, restrictions were placed on flying through Spanish airspace, but there were no airport closures.

These restrictions continue for planes flying between 6,000m and 10,500m, mainly affecting trans-Atlantic flights, Aena said.

Some 19 airports in the north of the country were closed at the weekend.

Morocco is also reported to have closed several airports because of the ash cloud. Airports in Casablanca, the capital Rabat, Tangier, Tetouan and Essaouira have been closed for most of the morning.

Icelandic volcanic ash alert grounds UK flights

All flights in and out of the UK and several other European countries have been suspended as ash from a volcanic eruption in Iceland moves south.

Up to 4,000 flights are being cancelled with airspace closed in Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark among others.

The UK's air traffic control service (Nats) said no flights would be allowed in UK airspace until at least 0700 BST on Friday amid fears of engine damage.

Safety group Eurocontrol said the problem could persist for 48 hours.

The volcano is still spewing ash and the wind direction is expected to continue bringing clouds into UK and European airspace for some time to come.

COUNTRIES AFFECTED
Airspace closed:
UK

Republic of Ireland

Norway
Partial or planned closures:
Sweden (total closure by 2000 GMT)

France (two main Paris airports plus several in the north)

Denmark (total by 1600 GMT)

Finland (northern airspace closed till 1200 GMT Friday)

Belgium (total from 1430 GMT)

Netherlands (being shut progressively)

The UK's airspace restriction was the worst in living memory, a Nats spokesman said. Some 600,000 people are thought to have been affected.

Nats suggested that the restrictions were unlikely to be lifted after 0700, saying it was "
very unlikely that the situation over England will improve in the foreseeable future"
.

Passengers were advised to contact their carriers prior to travel.

Transport Secretary Lord Adonis said he was "
closely monitoring the situation"
and would be meeting with key transport officials on Friday morning.

Experts have warned that the tiny particles of rock, glass and sand contained in the ash cloud from the still-erupting volcano could be sufficient to jam aircraft engines.

The Health Protection Agency said the ash from the Eyjafjallajoekull eruption did not pose a significant risk to public health because of its high altitude.

However, the British Lung Foundation has warned people with lung conditions to keep their medication with them as a precautionary measure.

These are some of the knock-on effects:

* Eurocontrol says Germany is monitoring the situation and considering partial airspace closures
* The two main airports in Paris and many others in the north of France are closing
* There is severe disruption in France and Spain, where all northbound flights are cancelled
* Nats is due to make an announcement shortly as to the arrangements that will be in place through to 1300 BST on Friday
* British Airways offers refunds or an option to rebook after all its domestic flights are suspended
* Flybe announces it has cancelled all flights up until 1300BST on Friday and more than 25 services due to run after that.
* British sports teams have been hit by travel problems after flights were grounded
* Dozens of Leicestershire students were evacuated from accommodation in Iceland after the volcano eruption
* Singer Russell Watson calls off concert in the Irish Republic after missing the last ferry crossing from Holyhead

One passenger at Glasgow told the BBC: "
I'm meant to be going to Lanzarote. We've travelled from Oban, leaving at 3am. Now we've decided we might as well just go home and do a bit of gardening."

Others switched from plane to train, with the East Coast line extending its 1830 BST London to Newcastle service through to Edinburgh.

A spokeswoman for Eurostar estimated an extra 10,000 seats had been booked.

She also said Friday's services were "
extremely full"
.

Budget airline Ryanair said no flights were operating to or from the UK on Thursday and it expected cancellations and delays on Friday.

VOLCANIC ASH CLOUD

The eruption in the Eyjafjallajoekull area is the second to occur in a month
This eruption has released ash to significantly greater heights
Volcanic ash contains tiny particles of rock and even glass, which can wreak havoc with machinery

A 1982 BA flight unknowingly flew into an ash cloud, shutting down all four engines
While ash can be dangerous to health, the current cloud is too high to pose a threat
The ash is likely to lead to particularly red sunsets in some areas

Animated guide: Volcanoes
BBC travel news

A spokesman for Nats, which was formerly known as the National Air Traffic Services, said: "
The Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre has issued a forecast that the ash cloud from the volcanic eruption in Iceland will track over Europe tonight.

"
Nats is working with Eurocontrol and our colleagues in Europe's other air navigation service providers to take the appropriate action to ensure safety in accordance with international aviation policy."

The European air safety body, Eurocontrol, said the cloud of ash had reached 55,000ft and was expected to move through northern UK and Scotland.

Brian Flynn, assistant head of operations of its central flow management unit, told the BBC: "
As it moves toward the Netherlands and Belgium it will dissipate and lose intensity, like any weather phenomenon. But we don't know what the extent of it will be."

The Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) has sent up a reconnaissance flight to investigate how the ash is distributed in the cloud, something that is impossible to assess from satellite imagery.

Dr Mike Branney, senior lecturer in volcanology, University of Leicester, said: "
Volcanic ash is not good to plane engines.

"
Firstly it is highly abrasive and can scour and damage moving parts. Secondly, if it enters a jet engine the intense heat of the engine can fuse it to the interior of the engine with a caking of hot glass, which ultimately can cause the engine to cut out completely.
