Bulgaria Signs Up for Drive-By Truck Screening

Bulgaria's Customs agency has implemented a "
Z Backscatter"
mobile X-ray system supplied by American Science and Engineering (AS&E) to inspect cargo trucks and trailers at the country's border crossings.

The highly mobile and versatile ZBV has been successfully used by border officials to perform rapid inspections of vehicles and offers quick and reliable manifest and cargo verification to secure Bulgaria's borders,"
Robert Postle, AS&E's senior vice president of worldwide marketing and sales said, as cited by the online edition of Air Cargo World.

Vanyo Tanov, director general of Bulgaria Customs agency added, "
Uncovering smuggled items result in increased income in the Bulgarian national budget."


The ZBV is a low-cost, mobile screening system built into a commercially available delivery van. The system's "
drive-by"
capability allows one or two operators to conduct X-ray imaging while passing suspect vehicles.

AS&E says it has sold 450 backscatter-based inspection systems to over 90 customers in 47 countries.
