Bulgaria's Varna Welcomes First Tourists for 2010 Summer Season

The first group of foreign tourists for the 2010 summer season were welcomed Monday at the airport in the Bulgarian Black Sea city of Varna.

With a charter flight of Bulgaria Air, the Kur-Club tour operator brought 164 German tourists from Frankfurt and Duesseldorf to the Bulgarian seaside.

The Germans are going to spend three weeks in the top Bulgaria sea resorts of Golden Sands and Sunny beach.

Most of them are elderly people coming for balneology treatment, for which they pay EUR 290 on top of the main package of EUR 1 000, said the Manager of Kur-Club, Krasimira Georgieva, as quoted by BGNES.

Georgieva has pointed out that even though the groups of German visitors are smaller, they are coming for a longer period of time. She stressed the need for the Bulgarian organizations to get a contract with the German health insurance fund, which will reduce substantially the cost paid directly by the tourists.

The Manager of Kur-Club said her company would be glad if it got the same number of tourists in 2010 as it did in 2009 but that it even hoped to see a 10%-15% increase. She said the next group of 350 guests is expected in April.

According to Dirk Schusdziara, CEO of Fraport, the German company which holds a 35-year concession for the Bulgarian Black Sea airports of Varna and Burgas, the Albena resort expected more German tourists compared to 2010.

The Varna airport also expects an increase in the number of visitors from Russia, Poland, and the Czech Republic. For the first time, it will welcome charter flights from Denmark.
